# Tignes

The town of Tignes not only has the second highest ski resort in Europe, but also a most curious history, since, as the original village of Tignes was submerged under the waters of the Lac de Chevril lake in 1952 when a reservoir was built on the Isère river, the new village of Tignes was built in 1957 at an altitude of 2,100 meters. Since then, Tignes has become one of the best known French ski villages and forms together with Val d'Isère the Tignes / Val d'Isère ski area. However, the “new” Tignes, made up of the districts Le Lavachet, Val Claret and Tignes-le-Lac grouped around a lake, is also well known for various high-profile sporting events. In fact, Tignes was already in 1986 the site of the first acrobatic skiing world championship and in 1992 the acrobatic skiing events of the Winter Olympic Games were held here. However, for winter sports enthusiasts, Tignes is above all a ski area that offers the best snow conditions from September to May, in addition to a varied offer of slopes, but also a ski village with typical Savoyard charm for the traditional architecture of its houses and buildings, and a tourist destination with an alpine landscape dominated by the gigantic Vanoise massif and peaks such as Grande Motte (3,656 m) or Mont Pourri (3,779 m) that guarantee absolute relaxation.
