# Morzine

Morzine, one of the oldest ski areas in France, is located in the middle of one of the world's largest ski resorts, the Portes du Soleil. Morzine's career as a winter sports resort began as early as the 1930s below Avoriaz at an altitude of 1,000 metres. In 1934, the first funicular railway was opened in the capital of the Haut-Chablais region, but at that time it was only used by hikers and walkers who didn't want to miss the exceptional alpine panorama. With the construction of the Avoriaz station 800 metres higher up, Morzine's ‘destiny’ as a popular winter sports resort was sealed in 1960. It is not without reason that Morzine-Avoriaz has since become a joint winter sports centre together with the younger resort. Both resorts have also set themselves the goal of protecting local nature and the environment and are therefore affiliated as the Morzine-Avoriaz region to the Alpine Pearls alpine association, which promotes sustainable tourism and mobility.
