# Cauterets

The history of the spa resort of Cauterets, dating back to Roman antiquity, undoubtedly experienced its heyday in the Belle Époque, the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. After Cauterets became known from the 16th century for the healing properties of its thermal springs, which are particularly suitable for the treatment of ENT and rheumatism, the small mountain village developed into a meeting place of the higher strata. Not only numerous representatives of European royalty chose Cauterets for their spa stays. Many famous writers such as Chateaubriand, Victor Hugo, Baudelaire or Flaubert came here for the gentle healing power of healthy water and the wild and impressive landscape of the central Pyrenees.

This eventful history is still omnipresent today and shapes the image of the small winter sports resort, which was recognized by a European body as a historic spa resort. Many of the old pompous Wilhelminian style buildings have been preserved and even today accommodate especially accommodation for spa and winter sports guests. In addition, there are still traces of the original mountain village Cauterets, which makes up the special charm of the small village, which seems to hide in the midst of snowy mountains.
