# Val d'Isère

At an altitude of 1,821 metres, Val d'Isère is one of the most famous ski resorts in the French Alps and, together with the ski resort of Tignes, forms ‘the most beautiful ski area in the world’, the so-called Tignes / Val d'Isère. In fact, Solaise and Bellevarde alone, the two mountains of Val d'Isère, offer skiers of all levels a wide range of slopes and variants, from beginners' slopes to professional runs of the highest level. And thanks to the many peaks of almost 4,000 metres that surround the Val-d'Isère ski resort, the many possibilities for freeride or off-piste skiing have become legendary. Of these peaks, the most impressive is undoubtedly the Grande Motte at 3,656 metres, whose glacier slopes are also home to the highest pistes in the entire ski area. Since the Albertville Winter Olympics in February 1992, one of Val d'Isère's runs has also become a legend: the Bellevarde run, designed especially for the downhill event by the Swiss Bernhard Rüssi, former world champion, and since then one of the most legendary runs in the history of skiing, along with others such as the legendary Streif run in Kitzbühel or the Lauberhorn run in Wengen, another classic. Another legendary piste in Val d'Isère, and one of the ‘must-do’ runs for any self-respecting skiing enthusiast, is the ‘Ancolie’ piste. Anyone who descends this slope in the company of an ES.F. ski school instructor receives the ‘Bellevarde’ diploma on arrival, regardless of the time taken to complete the route.
